Kennedy is a Registered Psychotherapist working with couples and individuals. She is also a Certified Complex Trauma Professional (CCTP-II), a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and holds a post-graduate certificate in Addiction Treatment and Prevention. Kennedy is currently also a candidate in the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (ATPPP) through the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society & Institute.
Kennedy has always been interested in helping others and she spent several years working in the Peel District School Board and community mental health settings before returning to school to obtain her Master's of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree from Yorkville University.
Kennedy specialize in working with trauma, substance use and couples. The client populations Kennedy often receives referrals for include couples in distress, male clients, first responders and those who have experienced considerable childhood trauma. Kennedy has extensive experience working with addictions, anxiety, depression, anger and relationship issues. Quite often people find these issues go hand in hand with experiences of trauma.
Kennedy practices from an attachment, relational and neurobiological framework and takes an integrative approach to mental health and wellness. Kennedy tends to work with people who have not had success with other forms of short-term therapy such as CBT, and clients who are looking for something more in-depth. Kennedy understands that there is not a quick fix to most troubles that bring people to therapy and she believes the only way to achieve permanent and positive change is to address the root cause of your difficulties while assisting you to cope along that journey. For many clients, psychotherapy goals may be broad and related to the general improvement of functioning, others may have narrow or specific concerns they wish to work with.
One important consideration to keep in mind is that research has consistently shown that the therapeutic alliance (the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client) is the strongest predictor of whether or not therapy is successful. Kennedy aims to make everyone feel safe within the context of therapy and combines her knowledge and experience with authenticity, compassion and genuine curiosity.
